Here I am with the four interns! My bosses have assembled a great team of people who I enjoy working with. We support each other and are genuinely excited about each other's successes (and unfortunately equally commiserate our failures). My hope for the interns is that they come away from this season appreciating all that the scientific process has to offer.
I set up a trail cam to try to solve the mystery of some missing eggs. I was so intent on finding tracks I forgot about the camera and caught pictures of myself! I shared on facebook, but for those of you only on here I'll embarrass myself for you as well:
I have had a roommate for 2 or 3 weeks now. I warned her that I talk in my sleep, but when I told her she remarked she hadn't heard me yet. Well, a few nights of me falling asleep before her and mornings of her waking up before me gave her some material (n.b. we both go to sleep around 10:30 and I wake up around 6:20, but she's already gone!). She told me she has heard me talking several times now and it's always about birds, checking on a nest, whether the birds are banded, etc. I woke up this morning remembering a dream about finding nests 2 four-egg nests right by eachother, so I definitely don't doubt that's what I think about even in my subconscious.
There is oftentimes this strange, dense fog that sets in. All of my field sites right now are "up island", so I always witness it there and am not sure if it happens elsewhere on the island. It'll be really bright, but you can hardly see the ocean from the beach! As if I don't already feel secluded living on an island this fog definitely conveys a sense of isolation.
I love the oystercatcher's colors! To be honest I have a special place in my birding heart for birds that are conspicuous and easy to ID.
I was picking up trash on the beach and grabbed a big bottle that was apparently this guy's home! Sorry I took away your plastic Mr. Crab, but I hope you go to one of your many other (more natural) hidey-holes!
One of our volunteers whom I really enjoy agreed to walk a long segment of beach with me to check for plovers.
Painted Turtle. One of our interns is doing a research project on habitat selection and abundance of turtles on ponds on the island.
